Guide Wheel from No.5 Gas Holder at Kensal Green Gasworks

Made:
1878-9 in London

Guide wheel and section of guide column from No.5 gas holder at Kensal Green Gasworks, by Vitruvius Wyatt, London, 1878-9

The guide wheels are attached to the edge of the crown on column-guided holders and rise and fall when gas is brought in and out of the lifts. They run up and down the columns to keep them in place and steady. The guide wheels encapsulate this sense of movement and dynamism, whilst also possessing an intriguing sculptural quality.
