LicensePapers in connection with the with the building and running of the Goa Railway in India by the West of India Portuguese Guaranteed Railway Company from 1879-1940. Includes correspondence with governments, two files of annual reports from 1882 – 1940 and a minute book. The minute book starts with the inaugural meeting of the shareholders in the West of India Portuguese Guaranteed Railway Company chaired by the Duke of Sutherland at Dunrobin Castle on 24th September 1879.
The West of India Portuguese Guaranteed Railway Company was a British-backed railway enterprise undertaken on behalf of the Portuguese government in India, which wanted a railway to connect across the border with British India at Castle Rock to help stimulate the Goan economy. The engineering construction and operation was British, it was built under the supervision of the Portuguese, and the returns on capital provided by the British investors was also to be underwritten by them. The railway went through part of the Western Ghats and it carried salt and seeds as well as passengers. The line is still in existence
