Embroidered floral bouquet sewn by Gill Foinette (1934-2017) pre- and post-diagnosis with vascular dementia, begun between 1990-2000, and finished in 2008.

White cotton sewn with multicoloured embroidery thread depicting various flowers in a bouquet. Towards the top the embroidery is detailed and neat with thin stitches. The embroidery becomes less detailed with thicker thread as it continues, reflecting the period when Gill’s dementia progressed.

Research shows there are more than 850,000 people in the UK who are living with dementia. The number of people with dementia is increasing as a result of people living longer and it is estimated that by 2025, the number of people with dementia in the UK will be more than 1 million. Vascular dementia is the second most common cause of dementia, after Alzheimer's disease.

This embroidery work is a unique visual representation of Gill’s lived experience of vascular dementia. The work reflects the effects of this dementia on Gill’s mind and body. Gill’s daughter Tanya said when describing the embroidery: “I find it a fascinating and beautiful reflection of how her brain struggled with this art form she spent many hours enjoying in her lifetime.”
