During the first lockdown in England, beginning on 23 March 2020, rainbows became symbols of hope. Many children and young people drew pictures and made crafts to display in the windows of their homes. Some people chose to display rainbow flags outside their homes to show their support for the NHS and key workers. The rainbow flag was designed by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978 as a symbol of LBGTQ+ pride and community and continues to be so.
