Plastic and ribbon Christmas tree decoration in the shape of a toilet roll with the words 2020, unknown maker, 2020

Prior and during the UK’s first lockdown to control the spread of coronavirus, panic buying and stockpiling of toilet paper caused shortages. Some psychologists commented that the stockpiling was a result of people attempting to feel like they have control over something practical, particularly at anxious moments.

Some designers and makers developed Christmas tree ornaments reflecting this trend which was not repeated on the same scale as national lockdowns occurred in November 2020 and January 2021. This was partly due to supply chains adapting to the needs of customers. Decorations based on the shape of the virus have been divisive. Some do not want to be reminded of the impact of COVID-19 on everyone’s lives. Others have wanted to commemorate an unprecedented year.
