'Zoom Christmas' greetings card, designed by Sara McLaughlin, London, United Kingdom, 2020
With people encouraged to work from home where they could and social distancing preventing people meeting, virtual meeting providers, such as Zoom, became increasingly popular. In December 2019, Zoom had 10 million daily meeting participants. By April 2020, more than 300 million daily meeting participants were the platform. Zoom was also popular for socialising and meeting with friends and families including quiz nights.
Christmas restrictions in England changed from three households being able to meet from 23 to 27 December to some areas only being allowed to meet on Christmas Day only. 18 million people in London and the Southeast could only socialise in support bubbles due to being placed in Tier 4 restrictions from midnight on 20 December. This was due to a more infectious variant of the COVID-19 virus being spread. Over the festive period, Zoom removed the 40 minute limit on meetings so family and friends could celebrated together the final day of Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year, and the last days of Kwanzaa.
