Red plastic 'I am a carer' card with the words 'someone depends on me', used by Jeanne Pring, with space on the reverse for the carer’s name, the carer's name, a unique ID number and the number to call to access emergency care support, part of the Carers Emergency Card Scheme is for people who care for someone with a long term health problem or physical disability, created by Islington Carers Hub, part of Age UK Islington, 2018
Jeanne first received her ‘I am a Carer’ card in 2018, two years after she started caring for her mum, Connie. In her own words Jeanne says “Receiving the card was a reassurance and a reminder that I am a carer and not just a family member caring for the one I love, and therefore I am entitled to respite and help. More importantly, it was also reassuring to know that if something happen to me, the card would indicate to people that I am caring for someone who might require assistance in my absence. I did not have a need to use the card after receiving it, thankfully, until the pandemic hit the UK, especially at the beginning when no one really knew what to do and the public was panic buying. My card was a saviour as it allowed me to have priority shopping at our local supermarkets, the same as a frontline worker, so that I was able to continue to put food on the table and to ensure all of mum’s supply needs were met.”
