Issue of Eureka, Vol 40, 1979, with article 'Quantum Gravity'. Includes insert with pricing by the British Nursing Association from 1982.

This is an issue of Eureka, a venerable journal of recreational mathematics by the Archimedeans, the Mathematical Society of Cambridge University. It contains an article by Stephen Hawking in 1979 called 'Quantum Gravity' stating a mathematical challenge that his research group was having at the time, dealing with the calculations necessary for Supergravity, a theoretical framework for unifying general relativity with quantum mechanics.

The whole issue is now found online, here: https://archim.org.uk/eureka/archive/Eureka-40.pdf

Part of Stephen Hawking's Office collection, but not coming directly from the office, is a bundle of varied publications authored by him over the years. Most of these are offprints -reprinted folios with just the author's article-, but this entire issue of Eureka was also included.

As is the case with many objects in Stephen Hawking's office, this journal issue happened to carry inside an unexpected item from Hawking's everyday life in the early 1980s.
