Rectal speculum, bronze, Roman, from Capparoni and Gorga collections
The lower bowel and rectum were investigated using this bronze rectal speculum. It was also employed in related surgical procedures. It shows the relatively sophisticated instruments used in Roman medicine. Variations on this Roman example are still used. They diagnose diseases as well as being employed in related surgical procedures.
