This hand embroidered textile piece by Clare Daněk was created in response to a Twitter challenge which invited contributors to share a single image on 23 March 2021 representing a year of COVID-19 restrictions in the UK, beginning with the first stay-at-home order announced by televised address to the nation. ‘Record of a Covid Year’ incorporates dates and statistics forever etched in the public record and collective memory of the pandemic with key events in the artist’s own diary that many will have experienced in 2020-21, albeit at different times. Its wheel design recalls Florence Nightingale's famed ‘coxcomb’ diagrams; statistical illustrations that drew attention to unnecessary deaths during the Crimean War as a result of preventable disease, and have since been used to plot COVID-19 deaths. Daněk states: ‘I [chose] to include a mix of the micro and the macro to reflect the fact that while we have all shared a common experience of some form of loss, so too have we have all felt very specific individual impacts as we’ve travelled through the year.’
