This device is known as a colorimeter, apparatus used to carry out the technique of 'colorimetry', the measurement of the absorbance of particular wavelengths of light by a specific solution, which can be used to determine the concentration of a known solute in that solution. It was made by the German optiical instrument manufacturer Ernst Leitz.
