One Test Set, kit and reagents used to perform a SAMBA® II SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19, test including four uniquely shaped cartridges, reference 8500, lot number 2085068-01, developed and made by Diagnostics for the Real World, 2020-2021
Responding to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, Dr Helen Lee and her team developed a SAMBA® II test for COVID-19 in less than three months. Originally designed for quick, easy, and reliable HIV testing, SAMBA® II tests had to be adapted to take swab samples rather than blood or plasma.
SAMBA® II machine looks for and then amplifies tiny traces of genetic material belonging to the coronavirus. Once samples are loaded into the SAMBA® II machine, the rest of the process is fully automated. Uniquely shaped cartridges contain the reagents necessary for testing. Results are given in two ways – from a visual result using one or three lines, like some pregnancy tests, and via a Bluetooth connected device. An integrated camera ensures consistent and accurate results.
The test gives results in around 90 minutes, far quicker than some laboratory-based tests. Tests can be carried out in hospitals at the point of care. After a successful trial at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in April 2020, SAMBA® II and the accompanying COVID-19 tests are in use across the National Health Service. The one millionth SAMBA® II test was delivered to the NHS on 7 June 2021.
