Papers relating to the development of the Brockelbank Automatic Coupling System by T.A. Brockelbank and his campaign to get the system adopted by railway companies to improve occupational safety for railway workers. Comprises of circa 13 items, including photographs, share certificates, letters, an engineering drawing, booklets and press cuttings/prints, created between 1873-1911.
Thomas Atwood Brockelbank campaigned for railway companies to adopt his automatic coupling system to mitigate the high rate of occupational injury and death suffered by railway workers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Railway safety reform during this period was focused on passenger, rather than employee safety, and Brockelbank's insistence that railway companies start taking an interest in technologies and working practices that seek to protect their workers is significant. The United Kingdom lagged behind other countries, such as the United States, in the adoption of automatic coupling systems.
