10 origami angels from Hexham Abbey’s On Angel Wings display which commemorated those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, displayed at Hexham Abbey between June and October 2021
Between June and October 2021, 4,500 of these origami angels were displayed high in the chancel of Hexham Abbey. The display, On Angel Wings, was a way to commemorate the pandemic and how it has affected our lives. Hanging high above visitors, the angels were intended to be awe-inspiring and to make a space for quiet contemplation. A place where people can come to reflect on the impact that the pandemic has had on their own lives and on their local and wider community.
The angels were handmade by local volunteers, schools, and Hexham Abbey staff. On each angel there is a dedication related to the pandemic: from remembrance to gratitude to the NHS and key workers. When the angels were displayed in the abbey, they were hung 45ft or 13m above the floor of the chancel. This deliberately made the angels high enough that the dedications could not be read from the ground. They were present but private, more like a prayer.
