Memory boxes like this one, made by SiMBA, empower families to make memories and give them something tangible to hold on to after pregnancy loss.

This box is specially designed to be appropriate for pregnancy loss up to around 14 weeks gestation. SiMBA have small, medium, and large boxes which are each tailored for a specific stage of pregnancy. Every box is put together by a SiMBA volunteer and objects like the teddies are even hand knitted. There is a birth acknowledgement certificate in all the boxes. In the UK, pregnancy loss is not registered until after 24 weeks gestation. Including this certificate in the boxes gives bereaved parents some written recognition of what they have experienced and what they have lost.

SiMBA was established in 2005. Initially, they only made memory boxes for Simpson’s Centre for Reproductive Health at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, but their work soon spread nationwide. SiMBA also fundraise to create and refurbish bereavement rooms. These give parents who are experiencing pregnancy loss a specialised space separate from a main maternity unit to give birth and spend time together as a family in private.
