Collection of images taken by George Stainton (b1852-d1926), engine fitter and driver for the London and North Western Railway (LNWR). 14 (6½ x 4¾ ins) half plate glass plate negatives taken on a A.J. Lancaster & Son 1899 Instantograph Patent camera showing engines, workshops, track, family, works staff, women and children, excursions including the Britannia Bridge, one of George's sons holding a toy train, two of St Pauls, Wednesbury and the front of Lichfield Cathedral. Nine photographic prints some taken on a Coronet Anastigmat F.P. camera and Kodak cameras showing showing family and other works staff stood in front of engines.
Few photographs held in the National Railway Museum Collection are taken by railway workers. Images of railway employees from this period are common, however the identities of individuals are usually unknown. This collection was passed down through the Stainton family and though their research we know the identities and life stories behind the people in the photographs.
