Card for Holloway Mutual Aid Residents Group #viral kindness, 2020

In March 2020, local community groups across the United Kingdom sprung up to support each other through the changing restrictions and national lockdowns. With a stay at home message and only very specific reasons for leaving home such as being a key worker or providing care, many people found themselves isolated.

People volunteered their help to pick up shopping or medication, a chat, posting mail, urgent supplies, and dog walking. This local community in Holloway, used one of the leaflets designed by Becky Wass, who wanted to help as many people as possible. She designed the leaflet on 12 March 2020, posting it on Facebook and making it free for anyone to use. She said in a BBC News article "Because fear has spread so quickly, its really important to try to spread kindness."

Becky Wass’s leaflet was recommended for use by Covid-19 Mutual Aid UK. They are a group of volunteers supporting local community groups to set up their own networks during the Covid-19 pandemic. Set up in March 2020, they provided resources how to set up groups, managing support requests and personal data, safeguarding, and creating leaflets. By Sunday 15 March 2020 at 1.15pm, 249 groups had been set up. This number grew to 4300 by May 2021, with three million volunteers.
