Airedale factory door opener

Door opener made at the Airedale International factory in Leeds for staff, 2020

During the first lockdown (March – June 2020), many companies continued to do essential work. This door opener is an example of the measures that they put in place to reduce the risk of catching COVID-19 and to make workers feel safer.

Catching COVID-19 through contaminated surfaces was a particular concern at the beginning of the pandemic when we knew less about the virus. Scientists have since found that the COVID-19 spreads mostly through the air and droplets, particularly in poorly ventilated areas and to a much lesser extent through surfaces. As such, methods to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus have shifted much more towards masks and ventilation and away from objects such as this which reduce contact with surfaces.
