Hidden Disabilities card, with the wording 'I am non verbal'

Hidden Disabilities card, with the wording 'I am non verbal' and 'I can hear and understand you. Please be patient as I may need a little more time to communicate with you, and talk calmly and quietly to avoid causing me any stress', designed by Tabbers Limited, part of Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme, 2020

Social distancing and face covering advice to prevent the spread of COVID-19 has made communicating difficult, particularly for people who are non-verbal. Many people have reported receiving abuse or being confronted for appearing not to follow the rules. This has impacted some people’s confidence and wellbeing. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme developed a card which people can choose to carry or wear. This card also has advice for the reader – asking for patience and to avoid causing stress.

Launched at Gatwick airport in 2016, the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a symbol that people can choose to wear indicating that they may need additional assistance, space, or time.
