The Detroit Electric was a popular make of car, selling 13,000 cars between 1907 and 1939. It was mostly marketed at women and doctors who were deemed to require the reliable starting without physically demanding hand cranking that its electric motor offered. Clara Ford, wife of Henry Ford, owned several Detroit Electrics including a brougham model like this.
This design takes its name from the popular horse-drawn carriage thought up by Lord Brougham in 1838. You can see the similar lines of the body if you compare this car to a brougham carriage.
