The Janssen Ensemble 2 trial studied the safety and efficacy of Johnson and Johnson's vaccine candidate JNJ-78436735 in a two dose regime for adults aged over 18. Over 30,000 participants worldwide were recruited with 6000 volunteers from the United Kingdom. ENSEMBLE 2 was conducted in collaboration with the UK National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). Clincial trials rely on healthy volunteers coming forward to test vaccines and medicines. Each participant is given a health check and informed of the potential side effects of taking part in a trial before signing a consent form to confirm they understand what the trial involves.

As part of the Janssen trial, participants are monitored for two years with data collected at different stages. Each vaccination was given 56 days apart. The trial found that this vaccine gave 100% protection against severe COVID-19, at least 14 days after a second vaccine.

Once the results were published, anyone who received a placebo (a non-therapeutic substance) was offered to receive a licensed and approved vaccine or invited to join a Janssen trial looking at single dose COVID-19 vaccines.
