Terracotta 'leaflet' and pot elements for CoolANT passive cooling façade. The assembled facade showcases a ‘leaflet’ design on one side and a ‘beehive’ design on the other, and is designed by Monish Siripurapu, ANT Studio, New Delhi 2022. The terracotta elements are assembled within a stainless steel frame structure, manufactured to Siripurapu's specification but procured separately.
This façade, consisting of an arrangement of 144 terracotta pots and 53 ‘leaflets’ held within a stainless-steel frame, exemplifies how innovative design can embrace traditional technologies as we seek to decarbonise global energy systems. Its design is informed by fluid design principles, its terracotta elements drawing warm air from outside a building. When operational, these elements would be wet, cooling the air passively via evaporative cooling before it is released into the building’s interior. Designer Monish Siripurapu is an architect based in New Delhi. In 2018 he was awarded a startup grant from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for this passive cooling project, as one of 12 winners of the Asia Pacific Low Carbon Lifestyles Challenge. Finding innovative ways to cool buildings is becoming more pressing in many regions around the world due to climate change, with India having suffered several extreme heatwaves in recent years.
