Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) hydrogen electrolyser from the UK’s first hydrogen refuelling station in Rotherham, which opened in 2015. Made by ITM Power, Sheffield, 2014.

Electrolyser from the UK’s first public access hydrogen refuelling station. Located at the Hydrogen Mini Grid at the Advanced Manufacturing Park just off the M1 in South Yorkshire, the station was opened in 2015 to provide retail hydrogen fuel services. Designed and built by Sheffield based company ITM Power, this electrolyser used renewable energy, from a co-located wind turbine, to split water into “green” hydrogen and oxygen. Initially, it provided hydrogen to vehicles at 350 bar and was later upgraded to be able to provide a higher pressure 700 bar to serve a broader range of vehicles.

This electrolyser is a first-of-its-kind model, being representative of electrolysers currently in use in various parts of the U.K. It signals the importance of industrial energy innovation in a time of urgent energy transition.
