Platform ticket, London Brighton & South Coast Railway, no. 4732, Haywards Heath [UP].

Platform tickets were introduced in the 19th century to allow people not intending to travel to enter barriered platforms that required the production of a ticket to enter. They became less common by the mid 20th century, when ticket inspections shifted to take place on the train, rather than on the platform prior to departure. The ticket is dated and has a notch indicating that it has been used. This platform ticket takes the form of a standard Edmondson ticket, which were the standard type of railway ticket used in the United Kingdom from the early 19th century until they were discontinued in 1988.
