The Menai Supension Bridge, designed by Thomas Telford was the world's first major suspension bridge, linking the island of Anglesey with the mainland as part of a project to build a road from London to Holyhead from which ships sailed to Ireland. The author William Alexander Provis was an assistant to Thomas Telford and resident engineer for the section of the road between Shrewsbury and Holyhead, including the bridge over the Menai Strait. He was closely involved with the design of the bridge which opened in 1826. He also worked to strengthen the bridge in 1840.
