The first railway in the Grand Duchy of Baden was completed in 1840. It was constructed by the state's Ministry of the Interior and its operation was administered by the state's postal system.

This book shows drawings from the construction of the railway between Offenburg and Haltingen which opened in stages between 1844 and 1851. It provides an excellent example of railway construction in Germany in the mid-19th century including 45 beautifully coloured and shaded technical drawings of stations, bridges, viaducts, tunnels, and other infrastructure.
