Diggle Railway Station and Standedge Tunnel Drawings
- Made:
- 1868-1869 in United Kingdom
4 plans of Diggle Railway Station and Standedge tunnel, London and North Western Railway 1869, showing approaches to the tunnel from both approaches.
The Standedge tunnels consist of four parallel tunnels underneath the Pennine Hills between Marsden and Diggle. The first tunnel was finished in 1811 for the Huddersfield Canal. The second was a single track railway tunnel for the London and North Western Railway's line from Huddersfield to Manchester opened in 1848. A second single track tunnel opened in 1871 and the final tunnel was a double track tunnel opened in 1894. All four tunnels remain, but only the canal tunnel (Britain's longest) and the double track tunnel remain in use.
These drawings were most likely prepared in connection with the opening of the second railway tunnel in 1871. The drawings include details of where the spoil from the tunnels was removed to.
