Roman marble bath reputedly owned by Emperor Hadrian, English, 117 to 138 CE.
Hadrian was Emperor of Rome from 117 to 138 CE. He is famous for initiating the building of the great wall across northern England that bears his name. He reputedly owned this marble bath. Wealthier Romans believed in regular bathing for the purposes of both health and socialising. The Romans introduced water systems and public baths into England. These revolutionised public health - but only for the elite and the military ranks in society. They were forerunners of the ‘health spas’ we visit today.
