'PE with Joe' child's t-shirt, sold by Joe Wicks, The Body Coach, to raise funds for NHS Charities Together during the COVID-19 pandemic, made in India, 2020
On 23 March 2020, the day the first national lockdown started due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Joe Wicks started a series of free workouts, streaming on YouTube every weekday at 9am. The first live video launched with over 900,000 views across the world. The following day 950,000 viewers tuned in. Joe was awarded a Guinness World Record for "most viewers for a fitness workout live stream on YouTube." During the high intensity workouts, Joe’s family also were involved, often appearing on screen. Joe’s brother Nikki was integral to the streaming, giving Joe comments from round the world for him to share with audience.
Joe Wicks’ aim was to get young people and their families doing exercise for the physical and mental health benefits. Many adults also joined in, streaming the videos at times to suit them. T-shirts were released to raise money for NHS Charities Together alongside YouTube ad revenue, raising £500,000.
By June 2020, these were three times a week and then stopped on 22 July 2020 as some restrictions were eased. The workouts restarted with the second national lockdown in England in November 2020. After 115 workouts in total, PE with Joe on YouTube ended on 5 March 2021. In October 2022, Joe Wicks received a MBE for services to fitness and charity.
