Lanyard, breakaway type, Transport Salaried Staff’s Association, ‘TSSA’ repeated in white on background of LGBTQ+ rainbow colours, from Archway Network Rail Conference, 24th February 2022. Archway exists to promote Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) inclusion at Network Rail, as part of the company's wider Diversity and Inclusion programme.
In the 2000s railway industry unions, including the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) and National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) began to focus on inclusion for their members. In 2018 the Transport Salaried Staffs' Association began its Inclusive Workplaces campaign.
Unions were focused on achieving policy changes within the railway companies and unions themselves as well as identifying the issues that their LGBTQ+ members care about and were affected by. In 2024 the RMT National LGBT+ Members’ Advisory Committee ‘demands equal rights for members regardless of their sexuality or gender identity’. ASLEF has an active LGBT+ Representative Committee and ensures that ‘voices of LGBT+ members are heard within the union’s structures and provides a forum for members to raise issues which they may feel inhibited to do in branches or with local reps’. TSSA’s Inclusive Rail campaign aims to make the railway inclusive of LGBTQ+ people by 2025.
