Beginning in summer 2020, the Social Wellbeing Team at Age UK Hillingdon, Harrow and Brent announced the start of their support package through monthly activity packs.
The twelfth pack announced “the biggest step forward to date” where groups of up to six or two households could meet indoors. The advice was to allow hugs but avoid face to face contact, have well ventilated areas, have good hand hygiene and wear face coverings if wanted.
The letter also encouraged people to take up their COVID-19 vaccination invite saying "the single greatest act for everyone is to get vaccinated." Despite the positive steps, it was still unclear what would happen after 21 June with face to face meetings. New staff would be trained to ensure everything would be ready when in person meetings could restart. The letter finished with:
“We are aware that some of you have lost partners and loves ones and also that some of you are nervous as freedom returns. As a team my staff and I are determined to support you as we move forward together. We respect you and know that each of you will have differing emotions. Together we will take steps forward to a better tomorrow."
Each pack had a theme and related puzzles, recipes, information sheets, colouring in and ways to communicate with messages boards by post. Realising that many of their local community might struggle with or not have access to digital communication, packs were posted and offers of help with WhatsApp and Zoom were offered.
