In September 2022, a seasonal COVID-19 booster programme began in the UK. The boosters were available for people who were at increased risk of COVID-19, such as older people and health and social care staff. During this booster programme, new bivalent COVID-19 vaccines were used for the first time. Both Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech have developed bivalent vaccines, which were approved for use in the UK in August and September 2022. These vaccines, target two variants of COVID-19 – the original and omicron. Clinical trial data for both bivalent vaccines found that they produced strong immune responses against both variants. As of January 2023, more than 17 million vaccinations have been given as part of the autumn/winter 2022 booster programme.

Every person who received a COVID-19 vaccine received a package leaflet from the manufacturer about the vaccine. It contained information about the vaccine and about things like potential side effects.
