- Made:
- 1890s in unknown place
Railway ticket and holder, London & South Western Railway, 3rd Class weekly workman return from Eastleigh to Southampton, number 2815, marked ‘39’ on the outward and return sections, in brass ticket holder stamped ‘S.J.Miles’, issued to Sidney Miles who was carpenter and joiner working for the London & South Western Railway, transferred from Nine Elms Works to Eastleigh in 1891.
This workman’s ticket allows for travel between Southampton, presumably where the bearer resided, and the London & South Western Railway (LSWR)’s locomotive, carriage and wagon works in Eastleigh, Hampshire. Workman’s tickets were a cheap fare offered to people travelling to work as suburbs expanded and people were no longer able to live close to their workplaces. Passengers using workmen’s tickets were required to travel on specific services, typically that ran before eight o’clock in the morning and after six o’clock in the evening.
