Octopus Energy Group is a British renewable energy group specialising in sustainable energy. It was founded in 2015 with the backing of Octopus Group a British asset management company. Octopus considers itself a ‘tech first’ company, they are led by technological developments, to drive growth and innovation rather than just simply providing energy as a retailer.

In response to the current energy crisis and preceding two years, Octopus devised several programmes to support their customers. This work is motivated by two key objectives: making energy fairer and reducing energy use, for the benefit of the environment. They have created an Octo Assist Fund, which provides grants to customers unable to pay their bills with real cash assistance. This money is taken from Octopus’ profit margin and given directly to customers. 50,000 customers have already benefited from this fund, which doubled to £15 million last year. Octopus provides assistance to their customers beyond direct finance. We propose collecting this material: a free electric blanket, a loaned thermal imaging camera, uniform worn by ‘Energy Helpers’ and t shirt celebrating participation in the National Grid scheme to turn off energy at peak times.

Octopus has connected with a huge number of customers through these schemes. At the same time, British Gas received negative media attention for sending Bailiffs into properties to force people to move onto smart meters.
