'Lilia' shaped sanitary belt in original packaging, with Woolworth price sticker (13 1/2 P), Smith & Nephew, 1971-1979
Belts like this were the precursor to self-adhesive menstrual pads which became available in the early 1970s. Comprised of elastic, the belts were worn around the waist with tabs or hooks at the front and back for attaching a sanitary towel between the legs. The products gradually disappeared from the market when new 'beltless' pads Stayfree and New Freedom were launched, which could be adhered directly to underwear.
