Prescribing pull card for Timentin (ticarcillin/clavulanate IV) and Augmentin (oral amoxicillin/clavulanate), made by Beecham Research Laboratories, 1986
Timentin is the brand name for ticarcillin - a semi-synthetic pencillin combined with clavulanic acid. Augmentin is a combination of amoxicillin, another semi-synthetic pencillin and clavulanic acid, also known as co-amoxiclav. Both were launched in the UK in the 1980s.
These antibiotics were developed by Beecham Research Laboratories. In 1957, the team discovered that penicillin grown from mould has 6-aminopenicillanic acid. By tweaking its chemical structure, scientists created medicines to treat a wider range of bacterial infections, with fewer side effects. These are known as semi-synthetic penicillins.
Before computers becoming wide-spread in medicine, prescribing cards like these were a quick reference guide as to what antibiotic could be used to treat bacterial infections.
