Augmentin is the brand name for an antibiotic used for infections caused by bacteria. It is a combination of amoxicillin, a type of penicillin and clavulanic acid, also known as co-amoxiclav. First launched in the UK in 1981, it was developed by a team of scientists working at Beecham, who developed sem-synthetic penicillins. In 1989, The Beecham Group plc and SmithKline Beckman merged to form SmithKline Beecham In 2000, SmithKline Beecham and GlaxoWellcome merged to form GlaxoSmithKline, known as GSK.
