Ellen was founded in the 1990s after Swedish scientist Endre Kvanta identified a variety of probiotic lactic acid bacteria that contribute to a balanced vaginal flora. Together with entrepreneurs they developed the world's first probiotic tampon, which launched in the early 2000s and is still available today. The brand takes its name from the probiotic blend in the products, Lacto Naturel or LN for short.
