Inner rinse vaginal cleaning system in original packaging, "The beautiful way to feel free, fresh, and feminine", includes reusable cleansing unit and non-acid cleansing concentrate for 8 douches, with original price sticker ($6.23), Block Drug Company, USA, 1980-1989
Vaginal douching – flushing out the inside of the vagina with water or other fluids – has a long history as a ‘feminine hygiene’ practice dating back to the Ancient Greeks and Romans, if not earlier. It has been used as both a contraceptive method and for cleansing purposes. Containing both a reusable douche and a specialist rinse, products like this were advertised as being necessary to maintain a clean vagina.
While douching is common today, its place has been taken by a wide range of ‘intimate’ soaps and cleansing wipes. Such products often contain chemicals that can disrupt the vagina’s natural pH balance, potentially leading to irritation or infection. Both historic douches and modern products perpetuate the myth that vulvas and vaginas are inherently unclean and unhygienic.
