Box containing Little Doozee vaginal douche nozzle designed to fit over a bottle of carbonated drink, novelty gag gift, Golden’s Magic Wand, Costa Mesa, California
Manufactured by Golden’s Magic Wand, this product was likely a gag gift rather than something intended to be used. Golden’s Magic Wand was founded in 1940 by Eddy Golden, and by the time he retired in the 1990s it had become one of the largest retailers of magic and novelty gifts in the US.
Douching – flushing out the inside of the vagina with water or other fluids – has a long history as a ‘feminine hygiene’ practice dating at least as far back as the Ancient Greeks and Romans. It has been used as both a contraceptive method and for cleansing purposes. This novelty product likely plays on the myth, popularised during the 1950s and 1960s, that douching with Coca-Cola could prevent pregnancy. While the drink does in fact have a weak spermicidal effect, douching after sex is an unreliable method of contraception and risks disrupt the vagina’s natural pH balance, potentially leading to irritation or infection.
