Inflatoball reusable folding pessary to support pelvic organ prolapse, X-Large, Milex Products Inc., Chicago, Illinois, 1995-1999
Pessaries are medical devices placed into the vagina to treat prolapse – when one or more pelvic organs such as the womb, bowel or bladder slip down from their usual position and bulge into the vagina. Their use became widespread in the 1800s and many designs from that era are still used today.
While most pessaries are made of rigid (or semi-rigid) materials, the Milex Inflatoball is comprised of flexible latex, enabling it to be inserted folded, before being inflated with the bulb to hold it in position. While more comfortable for some users to insert and wear, they must be removed and cleaned each day. They can also be removed prior to sexual activity.
