The Martin Richardson collection, which demonstrates holography as both an art and a science, spans the career of Martin Richardson, and tells stories of more than 40 years of holography, from his receipt of the first PhD in Display Holography in 1988 to production of holograms of celebrities such as Martin Scorsese, Sir Peter Blake, David Bowie, April Ashley and Will Self. Professor Richardson continues to work on the development of holography and its future applications and acts as an expert in the field. The collection reflects major advances in holography such as pulsed holographic portraiture, laser transmission holograms, increased usage and applications of holography, and holography in artistic display.

Holography, while best known as a method of generating 3D images and environments, has been used in fields as varied as security, data storage, microscopy and metrology, and art.

Holography was invented by Dennis Gabor while working on electron microscope imaging, the discovery of which won him a Nobel Prize in 1971. Advances were made in the 1960’s with the invention of laser, increasing holograms depth and image clarity. In the 1980’s and 1990’s holograms became used more commonly for commercial and practical applications, and reflection holography (utilising white light instead of laser) and rainbow transmission (now commonly used in credit card security and currency authentication). Digital holography came to prominence in the 2000’s with digitally enhanced or generated images becoming more commonly used in holography, enabling new applications in metrology, data storage and microscopy.
