SNP microarray chip containing the genetic data of 96 individual cows from Wills Bro Farm, showing a good spread of methane results amongst the herd from high to low.
Cows burp and fart lots of methane – a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent at heating the planet than carbon dioxide. By studying the milk of some cow breeds, scientists identified a genetic trait that means they emit less methane. This chip contains the genetic code (DNA) of cows with this trait. Breeders can select for this, helping to reduce climate-heating emissions.
