'Lycopene' tablets

Bottle of 50 'Lycopene' tablets by Holland & Barrett, United Kingdom, 2009-2010

Lycopene is a compound that gives fruits and vegetables their red colour. It is not an essential nutrient but is an antioxidant. Antioxidants are compounds in foods that neutralise free radicals in our body. Free radicals can damage DNA, cell membranes and other parts of cells. Free radicals are generated in the body in response to environments but also a byproduct of cell processes. An imbalance of free radicals is called oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is though to play a role in many diseases and conditions and the assumption was that mopping up these free radicals could prevent or cure diseases. The scientific evidence proves otherwise.
