House dust mites (HDMs) a leading cause of allergenic rhinitis allergenic asthma and allergenic eczema. At 0.25mm in length, they cannot be seen with the naked eye, live in our homes and are most common in warm, damp areas where dust containing skin gathers. Allergens are contained within droppings of the dust mites. Each dust mite produces up to 20 droppings a day.
Edward and Sandra Shober developed this product for their child who had severe asthma. They worked with researchers at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine including Nigel Hill to establish the effectiveness of their bedding during a two year clinical trial. The product eventually became ActiveGuard® Mattress Liners. Allergy Technologies who own the rights to the mattress have expanded their use to prevent and control bed bugs.
