'Pridwen' satellite heat shield prototype by Space Forge
Space Forge's 'Pridwen' satellite heat shield prototype is designed to protect satellites on the punishing return through the atmosphere and back to Earth. This prototype primarily tested the deployment of the heat shield. The shield is folded up and stowed on a satellite as it launches and operates in orbit around Earth. As the satellite prepares to return to Earth, the heat shield, the design of which is inspired by origami, unfurls and faces the Earth, entering the atmosphere at an angle which protects the satellite, allowing it to be retrieved from the ocean in tact. The heat shield is also designed to be reusable.
Space Forge specifically designed this heat shield to protect its own satellites which they plan to use to manufacture semiconductor materials - like diamonds - in the low gravity of space. This environment allows for superior quality and more uniform materials. Other companies are also exploring manufacturing materials in space, including medicines.
