Wooden figure of Job with an affliction of boils, possibly German, 1750-1850
The carved wooden statue of Job represents a biblical scene from The Book of Job in the Old Testament. As a test of his belief, Satan inflicted upon Job boils from the sole of his feet to the crown of his head. If Job cursed God, he would be cured. Job did not utter a word.
The story would have resonated strongly with many Christians as for centuries the horrors of bodies covered with boils due to untreatable diseases would have been all too familiar.
