Speculum, vaginal, Boivin, metal, nickel-plated, with obsturator, by Mathieu of Paris, late 19th century
This type of vaginal specula was invented by Marie Boivin (1773-1847), one of the foremost French midwives of her time. It is made out of nickel-plated metal and was constructed by Mathieu of Paris, France. Vaginal specula are used in the diagnosis and treatment of vaginal and uterine disorders. This type is said to have been used by Phillipe Ricord (1799-1889) when treating Empress Eugenie of France (1826-1920).
