Kramer's aural speculum, steel, by S. Maw, Son and Thompson of London, 1870-1901
The ear cavity was viewed using this steel aural speculum. It is funnel-shaped. It expands by opening the handles. This allowed a better view, or a tube or instrument to be inserted into the cavity. It was made in London by instrument maker S. Maw, Son and Thompson. Wilhelm Kramer (1801-75), was a German otologist. Otology is the study of the ear.
