Modification of Siegle's aural speculum, gilt brass and steel, cased, by H. Galante, Paris, 1875-1900

Diseases within the ear were diagnosed using this speculum. A speculum lets a physician look inside the body. Physicians now often use disposable single-use aural specula. This avoids the spread of bacteria between patients. This example is made of gilt brass and steel. The highly polished metal surfaces let light reflect into the body to help the physician see during an examination. It was made by French instrument maker Henry Galante in Paris.
